Members to reflect on COVID-19's impact on mental health and resilience

Sciana has created a space for members to explore the challenges surrounding mental health amid COVID-19.

A one-hour virtual discussion will take place this evening featuring Sciana Members from several cohorts.

Sarah Hughes, CEO of the Centre for Mental Health, will introduce the topic and frame the discussion.

Members will then hear from Thomas Fischer, professor of aged care nursing at Evangelische Hochschule Dresden; Rahel Naef, a nurse scientist at the University Hospital Zurich; Steve Clarke, head of mental health at Welsh Ambulance Service and NHS Direct Wales; and Judith Safford, a patient expert and advocate from Switzerland.

Ahead of the meeting, Safford has already blogged on her mental health and provided a patient’s perspective for participants to consider.

Ilona Kickbusch, chair of Sciana, and John Lotherington, programme director, will moderate tonight’s discussion, which is invite-only and held under the Chatham House Rule.

A previous virtual convening occurred on April 28, which focused on the initial responses to COVID-19. More than 50 people tuned in for the conversation, which saw participants reflect on how different health systems were handling the crisis.

The conversation coincides with International Nurses Day, which this year also marks the 200th anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth.
