Sciana 2019 Cohort Arrives in Salzburg with a Focus on Leadership

The third cohort’s second meeting will see members continue to collaborate and work on a Sciana Challenge

A group of “outstanding new generation leaders” will join members of the 2019 Sciana cohort as they return to Salzburg for a second time.

Between November 26 and 29, 2019, members of the third Sciana cohort will convene at Schloss Leopoldskron in Salzburg, Austria as they continue to respond to common issues and develop solutions.

Highlights at this year’s meeting include discussions on leadership for wellbeing, challenges of collaborative leadership, and collaborative leadership in learning systems.

Guest speakers include Roopa Dhatt, executive director of Women in Global Health, and Tanya Herfurth, co-founder and board member of Young Leaders for Health.

Members from the 2019 cohort will also meet with members of the 2018 cohort on the first day of the program. They’ll hear the results of the 2018 Sciana Challenge before listening to a presentation from Maria Neira, WHO director, public health, environmental and social determinants of health.

During the second meeting, members will also have the chance to meet two members from the inaugural 2017 cohort: Ruth Glassborow, Director of Improvement at Healthcare Improvement Scotland and Christina Brunnschweiler, CEO at Spitex Zürich Limmat.

John Lotherington, program director for Sciana, said he was looking forward to welcoming back members for their second meeting. He said, “They’ve been working on a Sciana Challenge focused on the sorts of leadership necessary in a complex adaptive health system.”

“One group has been exploring approaches to future health leadership that move from compliance to ownership, from top down control to mutual learning and support, and to co-design. A key element of this which another group has been focused on is the needs-oriented empowerment of patients, recognizing patient agency and what can be crucially learned from them. 

“Another group is exploring movements for social change, and how leaders can better build coalitions for achieving better health and well-being in our society.”  

Sciana: The Health Leaders Network is an initiative bringing together outstanding leaders in health and health care policy and innovation across Europe. The Sciana network is supported by a partnership between The Health Foundation, Careum Stiftung, and the Robert Bosch Stiftung in collaboration with Salzburg Global Seminar.
