Through out my 47 year career I have sought to make a contribution to a more socially just society whether as a social worker working with children and families or in national leadership positions in policy, regulation or delivery. Successful organisations engage their staff and listen to and act on those who use their services and this is key to delivering high quality care. I am firmly committed to a leadership style underpinned by a belief in the power of personal relationships to affect change and to make a difference Leadership has never been more challenging: society is more polarised , trust in public institutions is reducing and demand is not being met by increases in resources. Transformation of the way we provide services is the challenge faced by today's leaders.
I have had the privilege of undertaking three roles in the Sciana network: contributor , UK advisor and now the Co Lead designing and delivering the programme with my excellent colleague Mary Helen Pombo.
There has never been a more challenging time to be a health and care leader . Sciana is designed to help leaders to develop the skills, the resilience, the confidence and the courage to respond to the challenges they face now and also to anticipate the challenges they will face in the future in an environment that is characterised by volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity. My role with Mary Helen is to create a psychologically safe space for fellows to explore different leadership styles and to develop their own leadership 'palette' We create a high support and high challenge environment to enable growth, learning and development.
